Straw man fallacy
    2020-10-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: Senator Smith says that the nation should not add to the defense budget. Then Senator Jones says that he cannot believe that Senator Smith wants to leave the nation defenseless.

B: That’s a typical example of straw man fallacy.

Note: Straw man literally means a “scarecrow.” It is a metaphor for “a weak or imaginary opposition (such as an argument or adversary) set up only to be easily confuted.” The straw man fallacy refers to a logicall fallacy where an opponent’s argument is overstated or misrepresented in order to be more easily attacked or refuted. The technique often takes quotes out of context or, more often, incorrectly paraphrases or summarizes an opponent’s position. Then after “defeating” the position, the attacker claims to have beaten the real thing.
